Tannoura or El Tanura is a popular traditional Egyptian folk dance derived from the whirling dance performed as a Sufi religious practice. The word “Tanura” may refer to the dance, the dancer, or the large skirt used in the performance. Furthermore, the name of one particular group of performers in Cairo, Egypt is “Al Tanura Dance Troupe” [intl.feedfury.com].
رقص التنورة هو نوع من الرقص الشعبي المصري المستمد من الرقص بالدوران الذى تمارسه الطرق الدينية الصوفية. كلمة “تنورة” قد تشير إلى الرقص، الراقص، أو رداء التنورة الكبيرة التى تستخدم في الأداء. وعلاوة على ذلك، هو اسم مجموعة راقصة معينة من المؤدين في القاهرة، بمصر هي “فرقة رقص التنورة”
There seems to be a dearth of information about the history of the Tanura. The most obvious idea is that Mevlevi Sufis travelled to Egypt and practiced the Whirling Sema there. We, the Egyptians, picked up the practice both for devotional purposes, as practiced by real the darawish (from “dervish”), and as a folk dance. The Tanura evolved to include the bright skirts, specific movements and music, folkloric introductions, and so on [intl.feedfury.com].

Al Tanura show takes place at Wekalet El Ghoury Each Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. Wekalet El Ghouri is an architecturally stunning arts center in El Azhar area in Central Cairo, operating under the Ministry of Culture and the Cultural Development Fund (CDF).Since finalizing restorations to the Wekalet in October 2005, it has become a hot-spot for organizing cultural events. عرض التنورة يقام في وكالة الغورى فى أيام السبت والاثنين والاربعاء. وتعتبر وكالة الغوري مركزاً مذهلا للفن المعماري في منطقة الأزهر في وسط القاهرة، وتعمل تحت إشراف وزارة الثقافة وصندوق التنمية الثقافية (CDF). ومنذ الانتهاء من الصورة النهائية للوكالة في أكتوبر 2005، أصبحت بقعة هامة لتنظيم الفعاليات الثقافية. وأهم هذه الفعاليات وأكثرها شعبية عرض رقصة التنورة.
